We are a coalition of carbon removal innovators from the Global South, representing suppliers across three continents and various carbon removal pathways. We engage with European policymakers to provide a practitioners’ perspective on how carbon removal in the global south can add value to compliance markets and climate policies in the global north.

The Global South Carbon Dioxide Removal (GS CDR) Coalition is a network of leading CDR actors from Africa, Latin America and Asia, together with allied partners. Our members deliver verifiable, durable and scalable carbon removal solutions — including biochar, enhanced rock weathering and direct air capture — that can meet EU-level and global quality standards.

Our purpose is simple: to give a voice to producers of durable carbon removal in the Global South within European and global policymaking processes. Decisions taken in Brussels today will shape CDR markets worldwide tomorrow — the “Brussels Effect.” We want to make sure those markets stay open, science-based and inclusive.

Carbon removal is becoming increasingly relevant for climate policy frameworks. We expect the world to move from purely voluntary carbon markets to hybrid and compliance frameworks. The EU is already discussing how international credits might be included in future climate targets.

If the Global South is not at the table, it risks being left out. Our coalition engages with European policymakers to:

1. Inform them about the real status, maturity and potential of CDR projects in the Global South.
2. Influence future policy so that Global South removals can enter European markets on fair, transparent terms.
3. Promote climate equity by linking high-quality removals to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
